Blaze - Cat of the Month - May 2026

This month's Cat of the Month award goes to a very special patient: Blaze🧔

Blaze on VCA Tiv’s shoulders (cat, or parrot?)

Many of you may remember Blaze from her earlier story. Formerly known as Little Bit, she first appeared as a stray cat regularly visiting her selected hooman's garden. It wasn't long before her sweet nature, loud purrs, and love of human companionship won over her new owner, who welcomed her into a loving forever home.

When Blaze first visited Vet2Cat, our priority was ensuring she was healthy, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to be introduced safely to the resident cats. During her initial examination, we also discovered that she had significant oral disease, including fractured teeth, gingivitis and signs of painful tooth resorption. She tested positive for Feline Calicivirus, so started on the novel treatment for this. (See A new treatment option for feline chronic gingivostomatitis)

After further investigation with dental radiographs, it became clear that Blaze required extensive dental treatment. Due to the amount of work needed, her dental work was carried out in two separate procedures during May.

Throughout both procedures, Blaze proved herself to be an exceptional patient. She handled every visit, examination, treatment, and recovery period with remarkable patience and resilience. Following the removal of multiple diseased teeth and retained roots, we are pleased to report that Blaze is now healing very well and appears much more comfortable.

At her most recent visit, we discussed ongoing dental care to help protect her remaining canine and incisor teeth. We recommended the use of a finger brush glove, which can be a gentle and practical way to introduce tooth brushing and support long-term oral health.

Blaze's journey is a wonderful reminder of the difference that dental treatment can make to a cat's comfort and quality of life. Cats are often very good at hiding pain, and many continue eating and behaving normally despite significant dental disease. By identifying and treating these problems, we can help them live happier, healthier lives.

We are incredibly proud of Blaze and everything she has achieved over the past few months. From stray cat to cherished family member, she has been a star throughout her entire journey with us.

Congratulations, Blaze, on being our Cat of the Month for May! We look forward to seeing you again for your six-month health check in October.
